If the firmware of your router supports the bridge mode, you can set it up quickly. If the firmware does not support the bridge mode, you can install firmware like OpenWRT or another custom firmware such as DD-WRT. Different router models have other ways to create interfaces. Some of the general steps for the models are –
- The first step is to reset the factory settings of your old router.
It is recommended to reset the factory settings as some settings can cause issues in the future. Push the reset button for 30 seconds to reset the router. There are two types of reset buttons, the first one is the push button, and the other one is a hole where you have to insert a paperclip to access the switch.
- Keep note of the wireless settings along with the IP of the router.
You need to learn the network’s name, type of encryption, passphrase, and frequency band, which can be 2.4GHz or 5GHz. After going through the model of the router, you will have to give an IP address manually. So keep a note of all information that is needed.
- Access the interface of the router.
You have to connect the old router to a computer via a LAN port and not the WAN port. After that, open a browser window and enter the IP address of the router. Check the label on the bottom of the router to get the IP address. Afterward, you can log into the interface using the username and password given in the label.
- Choose the Bridge mode from the proper section
This step is a bit tricky as different models have different sections. If you are using the Netgear Genie (R7500), the bridge mode comes under Advanced Setup and wireless networking bridges. - Select the IP address of the old router.
