If you don’t know, then Cox Cable is the third-largest Internet Service Provider in the US. It is among those ISPs that provide a high-speed internet connection to millions of people in the entire country. Even though it is among the best, it is not recommended to use the modem and router that is provided on rent by the company.
This is so because the router and modem they will provide can be underpowered, and you cannot customize them according to your needs. In addition to it, you will also pay the rent. So, instead of spending a lot of money on these rented modems and routers, it is advisable to get your own Cox-approved modems.
If you are going to calculate the amount you will spend on rent in a year, that will be way more than getting your own modem. It is also best to do a one-time investment rather than spending for years. Speaking of other benefits of getting your own modem, you don’t have to restrict your requirements to the modem they have given, as in your own modem you can look for the features that you want.

Anyways, getting your own modem is not a task of one day, as you need to research a bit and then choose what’s best for you. Speaking of Cox cable, you definitely need a device that is Cox approved modem. If you don’t get a modem that is compatible with your ISP, it will be of no use because it will not work at all.
So, firstly look for options compatible with Cox. Apart from compatibility, you need to look at some other things as well, like speed, channels, DOCSIS version, ethernet ports, and more. As Cox provides different internet plans that have different speeds, you need to get a modem accordingly.
Speaking of the DOCSIS version, it is sometimes better to get the latest version because if in the future you change your mind to enhance the plan, or if other technologies change, then you’ll be on the safer side, or you can say that the latest version will be future-proof.
Well, as mentioned earlier there are some factors that need to be considered while selecting a suitable modem for Cox ISP; these factors are:
- You know that only a modem is not sufficient to give you an internet connection; it requires a router as well. So, initially, before everything, you have to come to a conclusion of whether to purchase a modem and a router separately or get a combo of them. This decision is totally yours, but still, it may be better to get them separately.
- The DOCSIS versions that are highly used nowadays are DOCSIS 3.0 and DOCSIS 3.1. Both of them are beneficial on their own terms. Since DOCSIS 3.1 is the latest one, it’s highly recommended as it will be future-proof. If you get the 3.1 version, you will be able to upgrade your internet plan very easily because this can support any of the internet plans that you have. But this is not the case with DOCSIS 3.0 modem as it has specific channels and speed as well.
- Channel bonding is another factor that is quite vital. But, if you get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem, it does not have a role. The number of channels is important for the 3.0 version, and the more the number of channels a modem has, the more it will be able to handle the traffic. So, you need to get a DOCSIS 3.0 modem with channel bonding that can easily meet up your requirements.
- It is mentioned that the minimum channel bonding that Cox has recommended is 16 x 4. So, it’s better to get more than that. If not, then you should at least go for 8 x 4 channels.
- It is preferred to get a modem that supports an internet speed that is more than your current internet plan. As Cox cable provides different plans, the modem needs to have a speed that suits the plan.
- Following is a table of Cox plans along with the DOCSIS and Channels that the plans are compatible with:
Cox Internet Plan | DOCSIS Compatibility | Channel Compatibility |
Starter 25 | 3.0 or 3.1 | 8×4 or more |
Essential 50 | 3.0 or 3.1 | 8×4 or more |
Preferred 150 | 3.0 or 3.1 | 8×4 or more |
Ultimate 500 | 3.0 or 3.1 | 24×8 or more |
Gigablast 940 | 3.1 | N/A |
- The next thing is ethernet ports. The numbers and the types of ethernet ports are important. This is so because you will find some standard and some new ethernet ports in different modems. The new ports can give you 2500 Mbps of speed. On the other hand, the standard ones can only give you 940 Mbps of speed.
- There are a few modems that come with a feature of ethernet aggregation. Using this feature, you can have access to double speed.
- In case you are using Cox Voice, then sadly, there is no modem available as of now apart from the ones that the company provides itself that supports Cox Voice.
